Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is the retail evolution of ICT — a price-action framework that asks one question on every candle: where is institutional liquidity, and how will it be taken?

What "Smart Money" Actually Means

"Smart money" refers to the participants whose order size genuinely moves price: investment banks, hedge funds, market makers and large prop desks. They don't chase breakouts — they accumulate positions inside ranges, then engineer the move that triggers retail stops. Investopedia's definition of smart money is a good primer if you want the textbook version.

The SMC Framework in Four Steps

  1. Map higher-timeframe structure. Daily and 4H tell you the institutional bias.
  2. Identify liquidity pools. Equal highs, equal lows, trendline liquidity and session highs/lows are all stop magnets.
  3. Wait for the sweep. Price grabs the liquidity, then prints a change of character (CHoCH).
  4. Enter on the discount/premium return. Use the resulting order block or fair value gap as your entry zone.

SMC vs. Traditional Technical Analysis

Classic TA treats support and resistance as walls. SMC treats them as liquidity targets — areas the market wants to reach so institutions can fill orders. Once you internalize that flip, the chart starts looking very different.

Building a Repeatable SMC Model

The fastest way to compound an SMC edge is to stop trading from memory. Architect each model — bias, liquidity target, entry pattern, invalidation — into a versioned blueprint inside AlphaFlow. From there you can backtest the same logic on TradingView with no ambiguity about what counts as a valid setup.

If you're brand new, start with our ICT trading beginner's guide, then graduate to the liquidity sweep playbook once the vocabulary clicks.

Build the blueprint, not just the idea

AlphaFlow turns concepts like the ones in this article into versioned, testable execution blueprints — so every entry has a logged reason.
